What Are Load Cell Amplifiers?

A load cell amplifier is a circuit that is designed to capture feeble and low-strength signals from the torque sensor or load cell and convert them to a higher level of electrical signal that the data logger can detect.

Load cell amplifiers can be built into the system, as is the case with most signal-conditioning modules, or they can come as stand-alone instruments that can be used in conjunction with the load cell. In either case, the load cell amplifier works in the same way.

How Do Load Cell Amplifiers Work?

When a load cell is measuring weight, the electrical signals that it produces will mostly be in mV (millivolt). This is a very small voltage for the data logger to detect, so the load cell amplifier will change the millivolt signal into a more powerful form, such as 4-20 mA, USB, RS485, RS232, and ±10 VDC.

A properly functional load cell amplifier will not make any changes to the core data it is converting, meaning there will be no false or inaccurate measured values.
